The Lord will keep your foot from stumbling.
—Psalm 121:3a

Simultaneously he believed
in volition and predestination.
Quoting popular humor he noted,
"No single raindrop believes it's
responsible for the flood."
Ever drops of his life accumulated
Submerging possibilities until
his life-as-sailing-bark found
only one harbor, only one course.
"Certainly I could refuse that harbor,
this line," he thought while
he beat course straight for it.

This is part of life that I’ve found hard to accept, the narrowing of possible harbors and knowing we may just be a smaller drop than we’d care to admit, but that every drop is precious.
Well, maybe I shouldn’t say this, but every road taken is also many others not taken. Decades later you realize how many “others” there have been!
I already see it and it’s hard sometimes to not play the “what if I…” game.
